Researchers shed light on mother-in-laws' unpopularity: "They found that if a mother's mother was alive during a child's first year it had a 79% chance of survival. But if the father's mother was around, the survival rate fell to 50%... Mr Voland told New Scientist that in religious societies, a man's mother would more likely to be concerned about - and potentially suspicious of - a baby's paternity."
